چکیده

The use of image enhancement for the visually impaired was flIst proposed by Peli ~d Peli in 1984. Today, the technology to implement image enhancement techniques in real-time exists. We tested the use of this technology in the reading of scrolled text. The purpose of this study was to determine if this enhancement algorithm would incre.ase impaired observers' ability to read scrolled text. T!lis is particularly important because Lawton et al. (1993) have shown substantial increases in reading rate for scrolled text enhanced with spatial filtering in a similar patient population.

Image enhancement improves reading performance in age-related macular degeneration patients

We wanted to determine whether the 2- to 4-fold increases in reading speed found for patients with age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) when reading filtered text, presented one word at a time in the middle of the display would also be found when filtered text was scrolled across the screen. Reading speeds for filtered text that compensates for an observer's reduced contrast sensitivity func...

Virtual unrolling and information recovery from scanned scrolled historical documents

The objective of our work is to enable the reading of fragile scrolled historical parchments without the need to physically unravel them, thus providing valuable information to a wide range of scholarly disciplines. This problem has not been investigated by the computer vision community properly yet due to the need for parchment scanning technology: standard x-ray machinery is not sufficient as...

Offline Language-free Writer Identification based on Speeded-up Robust Features

This article proposes offline language-free writer identification based on speeded-up robust features (SURF), goes through training, enrollment, and identification stages. In all stages, an isotropic Box filter is first used to segment the handwritten text image into word regions (WRs). Then, the SURF descriptors (SUDs) of word region and the corresponding scales and orientations (SOs) are extr...

Scrolled and rapid serial visual presentation texts are read at similar rates by the visually impaired.

Visually impaired observers read dynamically displayed text faster than text displayed in a normal page view. The goal of this study was to compare reading rates from two dynamic-presentation methods that have been proposed to facilitate reading from computer-based displays. Prior research has shown that both normally sighted and low-vision observers read text displayed to the same location, on...
